Carrier Classic USO Event is a Huge Success

November 2011

A terrific turnout of Spartans and Tar Heels for the Carrier Classic game watch resulted in a great night for our soldiers. Over 100 MSU and Carolina Alumni gathered at the Sports Zone on Friday evening, 11.11.11, to witness the historic basketball game between the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and the Michigan State University Spartans in support of the USO of Missouri. Nearly $900 in cash and over $300 in snack packs was collected for our soldiers, to be distributed by the USO. Kudos to our St. Louis Spartans, and yes, our Tar Heel friends as well.

Recently I was given the amazing opportunity to attend Engage 2011 and represent the St. Louis alumni club. As probably one of the only non-board members in attendance, the conference gave me an interesting opportunity to view how other clubs of all sizes operate. Perhaps more than anything else, it drove me to want to become more involved with MSUAA and take all of the principles and ideas I gathered from the weekend back to St. Louis. And, that is exactly what I did! Within the month since attending the event, I have been a part of my first board meeting, shared my ideas on how to make the club better, and designed a new t-shirt for the club.

MSU Students Canoe Entire Mississippi River

Oct 2011, Tom Benner

Alex Poe and Cliff Walls Canoe the Mississippi River: Source to Sea
Many of you are aware of the canoeing adventure undertaken this summer by two graduating seniors from Michigan State University. On the one hand, while this trip was a great adventure for two students who thoroughly enjoy the outdoors, it also became a quest to raise funds for Friends of the Fisherman, the officially endorsed fund of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, created as a way to help Louisiana's Fishing families, devastated by the recent gulf oil spill.
